It's a vague memory but I believe the designs went before some kind of committee, possibly made up of landscape architects, engineers, and some folks from the city and ADOT. I did supply about three proposals in all. The proposal that was chosen had the most 'southwest' theme to them. The others were a bit more eccentric. For example, I had a vision of used toasters being embedded in concrete (hundreds of them) in one panel, old irons in another, etc. It sort of fit with the acrylic food theme that I had just finished up after leaving Lawrence, Kansas the year before.
