When I decided to put the Carnivaleros name (and band) to rest a couple years ago I thought my songwriting days were behind me. (Well, I lied about totally folding the band as we are actually playing a very few dates because we have fun and the guys are in to it) During the last year or so of that band, I also had a trio format that was just getting off the ground when COVID hit. We had a regular gig at Public Brewhouse just off 4th Avenue and another regular gig was scheduled to start that fateful April of 2020. Oy.
But then last summer the songwriting muse struck again, which rekindled the idea of putting a trio of some kind together, playing songs from my catalogue (and select covers) that aren’t covered in the Morpholinos—about half instrumentals and half songs with lyrics. (In the FOLK world, TUNES are compositions without lyrics, SONGS are compositions with lyrics, and SOLOS are called BREAKS. My musical background was playing in school bands where SONGS are SONGS and BREAKS are called SOLOS. When I was in the Mollys, I had to figure out FOLK lingo pretty quick) I got together with a few musicians late summer and early fall to test the waters with some new blood but, as these things go, nothing quite gelled.
And yes, it was going to be a trio format, but I’m hooked on what a drummer can bring to the table. In the spirit of going with what you know works, my tried and true rhythm section will be on board; Karl Hoffmann and Les Merrihew. The exciting bonus in addition to what those two bring to the table is that we’ll have Alvin Blaine on all stringed instruments he decides to cart to the gigs!
Lastly, not wanting to use the Carnivaleros name, I went through a period of coming up with dozens of names that just didn’t hit the sweet spot—you know, like Tap Route, Urban Garlic, The Happy Cholesterol Band. But since my music has always seemed to be dropped by birds, Dropped By Birds it is.
I’ve set up a series of Tuesdays with the Tucson Hop Shop on Dodge Blvd. with the debut gig on Tuesday, February 27 from 6-8pm. Pop this on your calendar and hope to see some of you there!
And now…
Looking forward to hearing this iteration/incarnation
