Warning! Shameless self-promotion ahead. I had an interesting phone chat with my long-time friend Michael Hyatt last week and I was lamenting my ongoing self marketing crux. He quoted from someone–William Burroughs, Yogi Berra, one of those guys–“Business Ain’t Dead, It’s Just Looking For A Customer.” Michael has never been shy about promoting his work, from his amazing photographs of X the Band to his recent book release: Along the Migrant Trail – A Borderlands Portrait. With his words of encouragement I’ll keep forging ahead.
After the series of murals I talked about in the Travelogue, Part 1, I started messing around with sculptural ideas, sort of totem-like in nature, in 2015. I wanted to work with something more manageable that could be accomplished in my studio. These two were my first studies in that direction; The Wedding Party and Tower of Bauble. They are both still in my studio waiting – *sniff* – for a home. No, I’m fine…just give me a minute…..
Then in 2016, I went all out with smaller works. Of the dozen or more 3D works I made that year only 2-3 are still with me. The rest have found happy homes including the ones pictured here.
Blue Hair, lives in Tucson, AZ
Folk Trio & the Baby and Bluegrass Buddha both live happily in Sacramento, CA
And in the following year, 2017, I forged ahead with more figurine shaped creations, human and animal. I started on Dawg that summer (see Travelogue, Part 3), and a couple others included Bunny Boy and Untitled Figurine. All three have happy homes.
Lastly, here are a few more creatures made in 2018 and 2019 and have also found homes.
I’m sure you’ve asked yourself many times, “How the heck does Mackender get all those cool broken parts for his extremely cool sculptures and other mosaic work?”
In the next Mosaic Travelogue I’ll talk about the clothing series I started not too long before the virus changed out lives.
Stay tuned!
And now, time to ponder…
I’m always happy to see your most recent m post/insight/illumination appear in my email box. Bluegrass Buddha and Folk Art Trio say hello from here.
